Safety Policy and Practice

Moulton Pre-School intends to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions for all employees and to ensure the safety of all children. Pre-School will therefore ensure that:

  1. Safety checks on premises both outdoors and indoors, are made before every day/session.
  2. At the beginning of a session the outside door is locked and the key is placed on a hook out of the children’s reach
  3. In accordance with OFSTED and Social Services recommendations the red doors to the main hall will remain open during session and children will be encouraged to go the toilet independently, seeking assistance where necessary.
  4. Outdoor space is securely fenced.
  5. Equipment is checked regularly and any dangerous items repaired/discarded.
  6. Fire doors are never obstructed.
  7. Children do not have unsupervised access to kitchens, cookers or any cupboards storing hazardous materials including matches.
  8. Fires/heaters/electric points/wires and leads are adequately guarded.
  9. All dangerous materials, e.g. cleaning materials are stored out of reach of children.
  10. A first aid box is kept on the kitchen hatch in the main room and checked daily by a nominated staff member.
  11. All accidents recorded in the accident book by member of staff dealing with the accident. Parents are informed of the accident at the end of the session and asked to sign the book.
  12. Whenever children are on the premises at least two adults are present.
  13. On outings the adult: child ratio will be 1:2 or 1:3 depending on the ages of the children and the nature of the outing.
  14. If a small group goes out there will be sufficient adults to maintain appropriate ratios for Staff and children remaining on the premises.
  15. Pre-school operates a No Smoking policy.
  16. Activities such as cooking and energetic play receive close and constant supervision.
  17. The premises are checked before locking up at the end of the day/session.
  18. The chair of the Management Committee has overall and final responsibility for ensuring that the policy is implemented, he/she will be assisted in this by the Supervisor/s.
  19. Consultation between Committee and Staff on issues regarding health and safety will take place at Committee meetings.
